What is Kundalini Yoga as Taught by Yogi Bhajan?
Kundalini Yoga is the yoga of awareness and the science and technology of energy.
The Kundalini energy is the energy of the soul and your creative potential. It is something that already exists
within you but is simply waiting to be awakened and utilized. To release this
energy from it's dormant state and live in alignment with your fullest potential, your Infinite Self,
you can utilize this time-tested and effective technology.
At times it can be aerobic, at times
it can be quiet and reflective, but it is always a unique and uplifting experience. Kundalini Yoga is done in specific sets called Kriyas. These sets combine poses and exercises
to create a specific, cumulative effect. Because of the composite and balanced effect,
it is important to follow the integrity of the set and not add, delete or change the order
of the exercises or alter the time ratio of the sequence. There are literally hundreds of
different sets and meditations each geared towards a unique focus but which all have the common
goal of balancing the chakras and bringing healing and harmony to the bodymind.
To gain a full appreciation of the depth and possibilities within Kundalini Yoga,
I recommend you try at least three separate classes or kriyas.
Who Can Do Kundalini Yoga?
Everyone! Kundalini Yoga is the ultimate expansion tool designed specifically for busy householders like you!
If you can breathe and lean in the right direction of the exercise, you will get benefits! No particular level
of physical fitness is necessary. Since you can only be where you are in
any given moment, you start wherever you're at and build from there.
The key is to listen to your inner wisdom and only do your best. Your best is not perfection
or doing the ideal of the pose. Your best is the balance point between being lazy and being fanatical. It is
accepting where you are in each moment and doing what you are fully capable of in that time and space...no more, no less.
I also use Kundalini yoga sets and meditations as one resource in my individual BodyMind
coaching sessions to assist individuals in releasing habitual and dysfunctional patterns stored
in the tissue memory, in the neurological brain pathways, and in the energetic subtle bodies.
How Kundalini Yoga Works
Kundalini yoga awakens energy and builds flexibility, endurance and awareness by using:
- breath
- posture
- mantra (specific sounds which tap into various frequencies of energy
- mudra (specific hand positions)
Working below the surface, it balances the glandular system, strengthens the nervous system and
enables you to control your mind rather than allowing yourself to be controlled by your thoughts and feelings.
Although both Kundalini Yoga and Hatha Yoga can achieve the same end goal of uniting your finite self
with your Infinite Self, Kundalini Yoga takes you on the
fast track and gives powerful results in a short time. It is yoga designed for the busy householder juggling all the pieces of life so it needs
to work fast!
Benefits of Kundalini Yoga
Practicing Kundalini yoga affects the whole bodymind.
The internal changes from yoga persist throughout the day and are reflected by positive changes in your mood and behavior.
In as little as only 3 Minutes, you can get positive results.
- 3 Minutes = Increased blood circulation begins, distributing enhanced endocrine secretions in the body.
- 7 Minutes = Brain Patterns begin to shift and the magnetic field surrounding the body increases in strength.
- 11 Minutes = The nervous system begins to clear.
- 22 Minutes = The subconscious mind begins to clear.
- 31 Minutes = Endocrine secretions are totally balanced as is the energy of the chakras.
